FAQ : pompe à chaleur résidentielle WAO

An air-to-water heat pump is a heating system that extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it inside a house or building for heating and, in some cases, for producing domestic hot water. It works on the principle of thermodynamics, using a compressor and a refrigerant to transfer heat from one place to another. Economical and environmentally friendly, it reduces dependence on fossil fuels.

The system uses a thermodynamic cycle that captures the calories in the outside air to heat your home. The heat circulates inside the home via the water circuit and is distributed using emitters such as radiators, underfloor heating or any other distribution system.

Yes, WARMEO air-to-water heat pumps can cool a home. This is achieved by reversing the usual thermodynamic cycle, allowing the heat pump to extract heat from inside the house and transfer it outside, cooling the air inside. A suitable heat distribution system, such as underfloor heating/cooling, water ducts or a convector fan, is essential for the air conditioning system to work properly.

Installing a heat pump helps to reduce energy consumption, which means lower electricity bills. Other advantages include low environmental impact, multi-purpose use (heating and, in some cases, cooling), and eligibility for certain types of financial assistance.

The main difference lies in the way the heat is distributed. An air-to-water heat pump transfers heat to a water circuit, which can then be used to heat water for radiators or underfloor heating, whereas an air-to-air heat pump diffuses heat directly into the air in the home via indoor units.

Domestic hot water (DHW) systems combined with an air-to-water heat pump work efficiently by using the heat extracted from the outside air to heat the water. This hot water is then stored in an insulated tank and can be distributed to various domestic points of use such as taps, showers and domestic appliances. Air-to-water heat pumps harness the thermal energy of the outside air to provide an environmentally-friendly and cost-effective solution for producing domestic hot water.

Having your heat pump serviced by a professional is of vital importance, and has even become a legal requirement under the decree of 24 July 2020 and the decree of 29 July 2020. These regulations make biennial servicing compulsory for thermodynamic systems with a rated output of between 4 kW and 70 kW. Maintenance ensures optimal operation and extends the appliance's lifespan.

Most houses can accommodate an air-to-water heat pump, but the efficiency of the system depends on the quality of the house's insulation, the existing heating system and the surface area to be heated. For optimum installation, we recommend good access to outside air, adequate space for installation of the outdoor unit, a suitable heat distribution system (such as radiators or underfloor heating), and effective insulation of the house to maximise the efficiency of the heat pump system.

The installation of an air-to-water heat pump by a professional is eligible for state aid designed to encourage households to replace their old heating systems that rely on fossil fuels with systems that use renewable resources. These include MaPrimeRenov', the CEE scheme, the zero-rate eco-loan, etc.
